Encouraging Healthy Lifestyles Through Education A program sponsored by Trustmark Companies and Lake Forest Hospital |
|
Would you like to have a direct IMPACT on the health of your students? |
|
Through the Impact Educator Grant Program, your school can receive up to $1,000 for promoting healthy lifestyles through innovative educational programs.
As a health insurance carrier, Trustmark supports health education programs such as Impact. We created Impact because we know how important it is to reach kids at an early age and instill healthy lifestyle habits. What better place to learn than at school?
Grants are awarded in January each year. You can begin applying for grants for the 2008-2009 school year in September 2008. Applications can be completed online or returned by mail or fax.
The Impact program is sponsored by Trustmark and Lake Forest Hospital and is available to all Lake County Illinois teachers, kindergarten through high school. Headquartered in Lake Forest, Ill., Trustmark has a long history of supporting the local communities it serves.
For more information on the Impact program, download the Impact brochure (PDF).

How other teachers have made an IMPACT in their schools |

Heart Healthy Recess for Students “The grant funded the purchase of teaching guides, posters and reusable stencils to paint games on the playground pavement. Local businesses donated painting supplies to complete the project. The Physical Education teacher taught students during class time on how to play the games. Now, when out at recess, students are active with games where the rules are known and the games are fair. These games are not reliant on a lot of playground equipment and some can be played without adults leading the activity. Our students have been more active during recess with the added benefit of a reduction in behavioral problems.”

The Human Body, One Cell at a Time “Students explored the human body from the skeleton to the tiny cells that make the body work. Our program was greatly improved due to the addition of microscopes, which allow students to independently and individually create and study slides. Students gained a greater understanding of the effects of tobacco on the human body, how diseases are transmitted and how exercise affects us. My district and I greatly appreciate the support from the Impact Educator Grant.”

Going with the Flow “Students used a variety of technology, blood pressure cuffs, stethoscopes, CBL2 and EKG sensors, to learn about the circulatory system. They enjoyed using the equipment and took things further than required. They were challenged with the math involved in the EKG activity, but even my special education students were able to accomplish it with some extra guidance. The occluded artery model sparked a long discussion about high cholesterol, coronary bypass surgery and clogged arteries. I want to thank you for making the Impact Grant program possible.”

Making Healthy Eating a Fact of Life “This program brought healthy eating in school to the attention of students, staff and families. There was no program in place already. We also taught that treats are OK once in a while, but there are many healthy, colorful and tasty alternatives. The books, games and trivia contest prizes further supported our healthy lifestyle curriculum. Thanks for this grant and for giving our students, families and staff a great start in making Healthy Eating a Fact of Life.”
