Healthcare Reform Implementation at The Trustmark Companies
Healthcare reform legislation, passed in two parts in March of this year, will have a broad and far-reaching impact on our country's healthcare delivery system. Trustmark supports the primary goal of healthcare reform – to extend access to quality, affordable, health coverage to the millions of uninsured Americans.
Providing greater access to health insurance is a significant step in the right direction. However, we are concerned that the legislation does so little to address the underlying cause of the high cost of private insurance coverage – the skyrocketing cost of healthcare itself – and the cost-shifting from Medicare and Medicaid to commercially insured groups and individuals. Real reform will only be sustainable if it supports improvements in quality of care and does more to reduce the cost of care.
Trustmark is committed to doing its part. The reform legislation contains provisions that take effect over the next several years. It is highly complex, with many elements that must be further defined by additional rules and regulations. This will take time, and our understanding of the implications will become clearer as the regulatory process evolves. However, we are working to implement reform provisions in a timely manner. In fact, Trustmark is among the private insurance carriers that have adopted aspects of the regulation to offer dependent care coverage up to age 26 earlier than required, ensuring that graduating college students do not fall into the ranks of the uninsured.
In addition, Trustmark has and will continue to focus on developing innovative solutions to improve health and promote cost-effective care. Our products include YourCare population health management, CareChampion 24/7® advocacy services, and proven, integrated health and fitness management services added through our recent acquisition of HealthFitness Corporation.
These initiatives are more critical now than ever. The overall U.S. population in general, and business leaders in particular, are gaining a better understanding of what drives high healthcare costs. Trustmark is well positioned to meet the surging demand for proven wellness programs and health management services that actively address the cost of care where we can have the greatest positive impact with each individual person. The more we can do to help people be and stay well, the more we help lower the cost of coverage for everyone.
