Flavors of the Land

FEATURED FLAVORS

People from all over the world have migrated to the southern half of Argentina over the last five centuries to inhabit the industrial city of Buenos Aires and the nomadic Patagonian region. This cultural melting pot is infused with Mediterranean immigrants from Italy, Spain and more!

European and local flavors have been widely accepted into the homes of Argentina. Tradition has it that social gatherings are almost always planned around an authentic Argentine meal, and Sunday dinners are considered to be the highlight of the week, where pasta or grilled meats are regularly served.

Here’s more cuisine you may experience in Buenos Aires and Bariloche:

EmpanadaEmpanadas are often served as an appetizer to start off the dinner. There are many kinds, but typically these small pastries are filled with meat, cheese and sweet corn.

Steak and ribs are the most popular asado (barbeque) meats in Argentina, but chorizo (pork sausage) and morcilla (blood sausage) are also common. They resemble other sausages around the world in shape and texture; however, their tastes are quite unique.

You’ll find that many Argentine meats and main dishes are seasoned with spices and herbs, such as paprika, oregano, crushed red pepper, parsley and garlic. Chimichurri sauce is a popular grilling sauce in Latin America and a treasured Argentine tradition, too.

You’ll also discover that a lot of Argentine cuisine is infused with a global, Italian flair. Nonetheless, Italian staples such as pasta, gnocchi and pizza can be found on most restaurant menus, especially in the heart of Buenos Aires.

Fresh fish and seafood are favorites in the Patagonian region, where rivers and lakes are abundant. Roasted lamb, berries and chocolate are other Bariloche specialties.

Dulce de lecheWe can’t forget dessert! Dulce de leche (milk candy) is a rich, caramelized sauce that is considered an Argentine delicacy. Many use it as a spread, but it can also be found inside breakfast pastries and many dessert recipes. Dulce de leche is most commonly drizzled over a dish of ice cream — a must-try!
