Trustmark Critical Illness Insurance

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Critical Illness coverage affect my health insurance?
It works in addition to your health insurance! Trustmark doesn’t coordinate with any other insurance you have, and we pay you directly, so you’ll get your full benefit even if your medical insurance pays the entire cost of your care.
What is a “critical illness;” what types of conditions are covered?
“Critical illnesses” are conditions such as cancer, heart attack, stroke, renal failure, ALS, blindness, paralysis of multiple limbs or major organ transplant, although not every Trustmark Critical Illness policy covers all of these, and coverage may differ by state. Your policy will have a list of the specific illnesses covered and you can check with your benefits representative to see that list.
What qualifies as a diagnosis of a critical illness?
A diagnosis must be made after your policy effective date by a medical professional whose care you’re under. Most states define eligibility as first diagnosis, meaning the first time a physician identifies a covered condition from its signs or symptoms. If you’ve been diagnosed with a covered condition prior to having coverage, you may not be eligible for a benefit. We may ask to see documentation when processing your claim.
What happens after I make a claim and receive benefits?
It depends on your policy. The standard policy terminates once your claim is complete. Some policies include riders that may keep your policy in force after your claim. Check with your benefits representative to see the specifics of the plan you’re being offered.
What happens if my condition comes back or I get sick again with a different condition?
It depends on your policy. The standard policy terminates once your first claim is complete. Some policies include riders that may pay for subsequent and/or recurring conditions. Check with your benefits representative to see the specifics of the plan you’re being offered.
How does “EZ Value” work?
EZ Value is, as the name suggests, an easy way to increase the benefit amount of your policy without any medical questions. Each year for a set number of years, your weekly premium increases by $1. We use that money to increase the benefit. We’ll send you a letter in advance of each year’s increase, showing you what your new weekly cost will be, as well as your new benefit. You can opt out at any time.

EZ Value isn’t available on every plan. Check with your benefits representative to see the specifics of the plan you’re being offered.
How long will it take Trustmark to handle my claim?
We typically process Critical Illness claims within five business days, which includes the time we take to communicate with you to confirm our payment or ask you for more information.
What can I spend my benefits on?
Anything! We pay you directly, so you can use the money for anything you want.
