Breisach, Germany
Breisach was a strategically important city for the Holy Roman Empire because of its location just across the river from the French town of Neuf-Brisach. The cities were intended by their respective countries to monitor the border between France and the Holy Roman Empire. Neuf-Brisach itself has been declared a UNESCO world heritage site because of its unique design and structure as a fortress.
There are many exciting things to see while in Breisach. The Museum of Municipal history is the best way to learn about the heritage and history of this border town. The exhibits are quite impressive, with artifacts dating back as far as the Stone Age. Breisach plays a large role in the viticulture industry of south western Germany and is home to one of Europe’s largest wine cellars — Badische Winzerkeller. Like many stops along the Rhine, another Cathedral of importance is located within Breisach. St. Stephansmunster Cathedral is a beautiful Romanesque styled church featuring the paintings of Martin Schongauer.
