Heidelberg, Germany

Like the other stops along the Rhine river, Heidelberg is a city full of history. Heidelberg is the unofficial intellectual capital of Germany due to Heidelberg University — one of the oldest educational institutions in all of Europe. Since its founding in 1386, Heidelberg University has provided the backdrop for the work of many famous authors and philosophers. Contributing to its reputation for education, Heidelberg is also home to Germany’s oldest public library which was founded in 1421.

Looming over the city are the remains of Heidelberg castle. Damaged and rebuilt or expanded upon throughout the centuries, the castle is a mix of Gothic and Renaissance styles. It is considered by many one of the most important Renaissance structures north of the Alps. Heidelberg Castle also houses a 58,000 gallon wine barrel which is one of the largest in the world.

The history of the university and the castle aside, Heidelberg’s Old Town is just what its name implies — the oldest part of the city. Stroll down narrow streets, through old towers, and over ancient bridges stopping in at any of the small shops you pass along the way. For a little peace and quiet, cross over to the north side of the river for the Philosopher’s Walk. Follow in the footsteps of many of Heidelberg’s greatest scholars on a walk that presents tremendous views of the city and its castle.
