Mainz, Germany

Wine connoisseurs visiting Mainz are in luck! Mainz is one of the central hubs of Germany’s wine industry and the old town is a great place to shop, sightsee and stop off to sample some fine wine.

Mainz was founded as a military post by the Romans in the late 1st century BC and to this day, Roman ruins can be seen in and around the city. Though much of the city was destroyed by bombing during World War II, reconstruction has restored many of the old buildings and also provided the opportunity to build new ones as well. Visiting the Mainz Cathedral, St. Stephan’s Church or the Roman ruins will all give you a taste of the history that Mainz has to offer.

Mainz is also home to one of the most influential inventors in history. Though Johannes Gutenberg, inventor of the printing press, lived most of his life in Strasbourg, his hometown was Mainz. The museum dedicated to Gutenberg, the aptly named Gutenberg Museum, and The Museum of Ancient Shipbuilding are two of the highlights of Mainz’s museum scene.
